Microsoft responds to Philippines lawsuit

Microsoft has issued a statement in answer to the P100-million lawsuit filed Monday bv Southeastern College (SEC) for alleged copyright infringement, saying it tried to resolve the dispute beforehand. The emailed statement reads: “We at Microsoft Philippines Inc. are disappointed that Southeastern College has filed this lawsuit.”

The lawsuit alleges that Microsoft illegally copied a copyrighted teaching manual developed by SEC school director Conrad Mañalac and then distributed on CD to public school teachers as part of Microsoft’s “Partners in Learning” program.

Named as respondents in the case are Seattle, US-based Microsoft Corp. and Microsoft Philippines, for alleged violation of Republic Act 8293 or the Intellectual Property Code.

“They brought this matter to our attention a year ago and we worked hard to resolve it, but without success. For all intents and purposes, this is a purely local matter which does not involve Microsoft Corporation,” the statement said. (link)
