Iomega announced some new eGo portable drives. The new drives will come with 128-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), 250GB and 320GB capacities available. There will be an option that once the drive is disconnected from the USB connection it will automatically encrypt data on the drive. Pretty handy when you need to run from KGB secret agents (hellooo? MI:6?). Drives will also come with Mozy online back up services up to 2GB.
A point of interest is the Iomega’s rubber Power Grip which wraps around the drive to provide a bit of cushion protection in the event you happen to drop the drive. The Drop Guard Xtreme feature claims to protects the drive from drops as high as seven feet. Really? 7 feet?! If it’s true, that’s pretty impressive. I haven’t seen a drive survive a 2 foot drop for very long. Usually after a drop the drive will run for a bit then the next time you power it on it’s dead. However I’m guessing if you drop it and it doesn’t land on the section that has a nice rubber cushion on it, your drive is as good as dead. Still it would be an interesting topic to try in a lab.
