The beginning of the end

Well maybe that sounds a bit too ominous. I’m sure you’ve heard the news by now. The iPhone will showing up in local Walmarts in the near future. Soon the “Jesus Phone” will be in the hands of rednecks all over America. Although the rumors of it being priced at $99 was just that, a rumor. However Walmart does provide a huge distribution chain for future Apple products. How many million did they sell this year?

One thing I associate with Walmart is “cheap”, ok fine “value”. It’s pretty much a guarantee that you can find pretty much anything there for cheaper than other places. So this begs the question, why would I buy my iPhone from anywhere else? Why bother going to the AT&T office? Why go to the Apple store? Why not save myself $2 and buy my iPhone at Walmart, as well as a 10 pack of underwear for $3.99? I think true Apple fanboys (and girls) may be disheartened at the thought of their “exclusive” little club somehow being watered down by their products being sold at Walmart. It’s a completely foreign idea to have Apple and Walmart together in a marriage (will probably end in divorce so hang in there).

I have nothing against Walmart however I’m sure most people have a preconditioned stereotype of the Walmart culture and the baggage that goes along with it. I’m not so sure that technology fits well inside it. We’ll have to wait and see how things turn out.
