Google Problems

Remember the excitement when you spotted a Google camera truck driving around you neighborhood? Well they weren’t just collecting photos as it turns out. When making the rounds the Google fleet may have collected some personal data in the process. Oops. So what’s a little personal data? Um, maybe a few emails from unprotected wifi networks? Kinda like a roving fleet of wireless wire tappers at your disposal. Nothing significant was collected (they say) and also you have to remember that the trucks/cars were always on the move and access points can only stay in range for so long. By the way, if you haven’t secured your wireless network, now is probably a good time to do so.

I guess the Google phone experiment is over … after 4 months. I’m not exactly sure what sort of success they were expecting from their online store. To be come a major phone distributor? Boost their Android platform? Or maybe just make a bit of money? I guess after Verizon and Vodafone pulled their support the writing was on the wall. Perhaps they would have had more success if they stayed in “beta”. Way to stick with it guys! For those who still want the phone you will be able to get it at some retail locations and from the web store for the time being.

Canadian Mobile News

With eBay the only source to score a Nexus One Google superphone Canadians were kind of left out of the loop. However there is hope. Wind Mobile supposedly is in talks to bring the phone to Canada. Woot! This would be a significant coup for the fresh wireless company. But keep in mind you have to buy the phone which is currently priced around $500 US, so expect to pay at least as much if you want experience the Google superphone in Canada.

Android 1.5 got ya down? Tired of harassing Rogers and HTC to provide an OS update? Well there is some good news in store for HTC users in Canada. HTC will be providing some updates for the Magic and Dream. The Magic will get the full 2.1 update, while the Dream will get some updates but remain at 1.5. I guess something is better than nothing. The Magic now appears slightly more appealing.

However we’re all waiting on the Sony Xperia X10 aren’t we?

Japanese Robot: bow to your overlord

A pearly white robot that looks a little like E.T. boosted a man out of bed, chatted and helped prepare his breakfast with its deft hands in Tokyo on Tuesday, in a further sign robots are becoming more like their human inventors.Twendy-One, named as a 21st century edition of a previous robot, Wendy, has soft hands and fingers that gently grip, enough strength to support humans as they sit up and stand, and supple movements that respond to human touch.

It can pick up a loaf of bread without crushing it, serve toast and help lift people out of bed.

“It’s the first robot in the world with this much system integration,” said Shigeki Sugano, professor of mechanical engineering at Waseda University, who led the Twendy-One project (http://twendyone.com) and demonstrated the result on Tuesday. (link)

U.S. Canada program supplies computers to 3rd world

A project that hopes to supply developing-world schoolchildren with computers for less than $200 has extended a promotion in which a customer buying the machine in the United States or Canada automatically donates a second one to a poor country. The One Laptop Per Child Program said the “Give One, Get One” program will now run through Dec. 31, instead of ending Nov. 26.

The non-profit spinoff from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said customers in the United States and Canada will pay $399 for two children’s laptops, with the buyer taking one of the green-and-white, low-power “XO” machine. The other is sent to a child in a country such as Rwanda, Afghanistan, Cambodia, Haiti or Mongolia. (story)
