Robot Sexy Time!

Is the regular love doll not doing it for you? Well get ready for Roxxxy (video) the sex robot! Hi-five! Sexy time! And you thought Real Dolls were creepy. Now, I know what you’re wondering, what’s so special, besides the $7,000 price tag. It/she comes with a laptop that is programmed with it’s/her personality. I’m guessing built in microphone and speakers to respond to voice commands. Wow, just wow. Who spends this much time building something like this? But more importantly who’s going to buy this sexbot? Rich bastards no doubt.

AirPort disk not supported by Time Machine, wha?

Apple confirmed for me last week that a feature for using hard drives attached via USB to an AirPort Extreme Base Station is an unsupported feature. The company declined to provide further information. This feature was available in the betas of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, as has been widely reported, but was removed from the public Leopard feature list and from the shipping version of the operating system. Apple had been working on providing me a definitive statement since my review of Time Capsule for Macworld was published on 21-Mar-08.

What a “lack of support” means is that if you attempt to use an 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station for Time Machine backup, you won’t get any help from Apple’s technical support, something that readers have already told me. I’ve been receiving reports that USB-attached drives work erratically with an AirPort Extreme. TidBITS editor Joe Kissell and I have been discussing the strange array of scenarios in which you find an Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) volume that’s shared by the AirPort Extreme server not appearing automatically for Time Machine. (See “MacVoices Podcast Covers Time Capsule Ins and Outs,” 2008-04-03, for links to the podcasts. I also talked about Time Capsule and this problem in a podcast on 26-Mar-08 with Jason Snell, editorial director for Macworld.) (link)

China shuts down “real time” porn site

Chinese police have shut down a Web site selling real-time porn and arrested 33 people, state media said on Wednesday, part of a campaign which led to the shut-down of 44,000 Web sites and arrest of 868 people last year.

China launched a crackdown on online pornography and “unhealthy” Web content after Chinese President Hu Jintao said the country’s sprawling Internet posed a threat to social stability.

The live site, whose server was based in Taiwan, charged viewers to watch strip shows or other pornographic performances that were staged in China, Xinhua news agency said.

“This operation started up in the second half of 2006 and took in more than 1 million yuan ($137,000) in just three months,” it said. (story)

Travelling to Japan? Get an NEC cellphone

Japanese electronics giant NEC Corp. said Friday it has created a world-first real-time translator on a cellphone, which can instantly turn Japanese travellers’ words into English.

NEC said it was the first time in the world that automatic translation is available on a cellphone without external help.

The company made it possible by making the software, which includes a voice-recognition system and translation functions, compact enough to operate on a small microchip mounted in a cellphone, it said.

The software, which can recognise some 50,000 Japanese words, is especially designed for smooth translation of travel phrases such as “Can I have a subway route map?”. (link)

My apologies

I must apologize to my loyal readers. I’ve been exceptionally busy at work (I blog part-time). I will be back blogging new content probably in a couple of days. Thanks for your understanding.

Invention of the Year: iPhone … WTF?!

The Time article gives 5 reasons:

1. it’s “pretty” (but it still won’t go down on you)

2. it’s “touchy – feely” (stop touching it you freak)
3. it will make other phones better (or force them to be)

4. it’s more than a phone, it’s a whole new platform (and if you’re not on it, you’re not cool)

5. the next one is going to be way better (just like the fatty nano)
